Stylist’s Letter: Packing Tips for upcoming trips
As you’re jet setting in the months ahead, cooling off in the mountains or warming up at the beach - packing with intention will make traveling easier and leave you feeling comfortable and confident upon arrival.
Here are Jenny’s top tips for packing well and ensuring you have all that you need (and not too much) to enjoy the season:
Create a Packing List: Prior to packing, make a quick list of all that you anticipate needing on your upcoming trip. For this, I love to use the ‘bullets’ feature in ‘Notes’ on my iPhone which allows me to ‘check off’ items as I add them to my packing pile.
Stick to a Color Palette: Choose a cohesive color palette for the items you’ll take on your trip. My favorite this time of year: white, cream, blue, green, and yellow. While traveling, having a defined color palette makes it easier to mix and match items, as needed, and create cohesive outfits effortlessly.
Photograph Outfits: Once outfits are selected, try-on or lay out each completed look, including clothing, shoes, and accessories, to check that you have all necessary elements while avoiding overpacking. Take photos of each outfit before placing items into your suitcase to create an easy-to-reference virtual lookbook.
Focus on Footwear: Pack comfortable yet stylish shoes that complement a wide variety of outfits. Limit the number of shoes by choosing pairs that can be worn with multiple looks. I try to pack one shoe for exercise, one shoe for day-time wear, and one shoe for the evenings (always a heel!). As you pack footwear, consider which purse(s) you’ll bring and how those align with your shoe options in both color and style.
Stay Organized: Use pouches or packing cubes to keep clothing, shoes, accessories, and toiletries organized within your suitcase. This helps create more space in your suitcase while keeping outfits and clothing categories organized.
Establish Your Travel Must-Haves: Assess the items you’re consistently enjoying on trips and make these a staple part of your packing process. See mine in the gallery below — including cute and comfortable sneakers, packing cubes, and my White + Warren travel wrap.
Each of these tips — whether you implement one or all — will help you curate a travel wardrobe that's fashionable, functional, and aligned with your personal style.
